Ash Wood Flooring
Ash Wood Flooring Information
Ash wood flooring offers the floor space an incredibly solid, versatile and pleasing wood, which can be used as a tool to open up and visually expand any small room. The paled, creamy look gives the floor a distinctly British feel from a distinctly British wood, which can be used both in the home and for commercial purposes.
With the Ash Tree being the fourth most common tree in Britain, there’s no reason not to enjoy the bright, elegant shades and tones that the tree has to offer. A popular tree found in most woodland across the United Kingdom, the Ash Tree is able to survive on a variety of soils, including poorer soils where no other tree can grow. This very versatility gave the tree a mythical status among ancient Britain’s, with the tree often being used for medicinal purposes wherein a patient was often passed through the broken trunk of an Ash Tree where it would then be ritually healed for broken limbs. With a possible lifespan of up to four hundred years, the tree has been popular amongst carpenters for centuries, with Anglo-Saxons using the material for weaponry and tools. As near as seventy years ago, the wood was even used to make the wings on the Havilland Mosquito which flew for the Royal Air Force in World War Two. Happily, Ash Wood is now used for more luxurious purposes such as walking sticks, oars, and of course, flooring.
The difference between solid ash wood flooring and an engineered solid ash wood floorboard is that the top layer in an engineered board is often between five and six millimetres thick, whereas solid boards are often between eighteen and twenty-one millimetres thick.
Engineered flooring is made by multiple layers of crossed wood being layered, fused and then pressed together at very high pressures. This creates a strong material that is in fact much more durable than most other flooring materials. Unlike regular floors, engineered floors do not contract and expand with the changing temperature, which means that you do not have to acclimatise the boarding. As well as this, engineered wood has a much greater moisture threshold than average wood. Therefore, the engineered variant of Ash Flooring can be used in a variety of environments, including basements, where humidity levels may be higher than average. This means that most engineered floors can have a lifespan of up to one hundred years without having to be renewed.
