Beech Wood Flooring
Beech Wood Flooring Information
It is the undeniable beauty of the tree that makes beech wood flooring so popular all over the world. This is then doubled by its versatility and the reputation of tough and durable surfaces. The hardness of the wood (as judged by the Janka hardness test) is almost identical Red Oak (being just under 1% softer, Red Oak is the benchmark of the Janka Scale), proving its endurance as a top quality hardwood. This is thanks to the straight, tight graining within the beach that means it is able to withstand large knocks and shocks. Due to this, the wood is often used on factory floors and other high-traffic areas where it responds well to repeated friction and movement.
Avaliable as both engineered beech flooring and solid beech wood flooring, the appearance of the wood is also very pleasing to the eye, and works well in rooms of little space due to the light texture of the grain. European Beech ist also softer in texture than its North American Counterpart (Fagus Grandifolia), giving the wood a much softer and more applicable texture, fitting itself to a style which fits your décor.
Residing in the same family as Oak, the Beech Tree occupies much of the world including North America, Australia, Japan and Europe though its origins lie in the British Isles. Here, in times long past, the tree was simply known to the natives as ‘bece’ or ‘beoce’. These two words have been linked through history to the word ‘book’ wherein, at a time before paper, ancient writings were engraved upon beechen boards. As well as offering its services in literature, the beech tree also produces an edible nut (known as the beechnut) which provides nutrition for many animals such as deer and squirrels. Humans are also able to consume the beechnut, although it is advised not to eat too many at once, as this can cause illness in some people. The tough resilience of the tree is probably the reason why it has spread so well throughout the globe, with the tree being able to withstand high summer temperatures coupled with the advantage that it is able to withstand periods of long drought.
Although the Beech Tree is not primarily known for its beechnuts, its primary source of fame derives in its natural beauty, which over spring, produces a spectacular show amongst its branches of budding leaves and flowers. These command a whole palate of bright and wonderful colours, which have inspired many poems from well-known philosophers and poets including Pelleas and Ovid. As well as its Latin name (Fagus Sylvatica) the tree also goes under the unofficial titles of The Lady of The Woods and The Tree of Wishes.
