Blacknut wood is an extremely versatile and resistant wood with a Janka rating of 1720, putting it well above the benchmark rating for density, which stands at 1290 and is the standard for Northern Red Oak. This means that Blackwood is an excellent material flooring, making it great for surfaces that expect high levels of traffic and constant friction. Ideal for homes and commercial businesses alike, the flooring is also a hugely popular flooring material in Eastern countries such as China. Our Blacknut flooring is made from the Small Leaf Acacia, and is not to be confused with the wood produced by the Big Leaf Acacia as the wood produced by the Big Leaf is generally softer in tone and provides subtler, less expansive flooring. Besides flooring, Blacknut wood also used for a wide range of other uses. Due to its beautiful texture, striking characteristics and swirling knots, the wood is also used for the construction of furniture and high quality musical instruments such as nylon stringed guitars. In years gone by, the wood was mainly grown for the purposes of military warfare as for the construction of warships around Europe and the Middle East.
Blacknut wood comes from the amazing Acacia genus and more specifically, from the tree known as the Small Leaf Acacia.
The tree itself has an amazing history and it is mentioned in the Bible for being the wood used in the construction of the Ark of the Covenant. The name Acacia itself derives from Greek and was given by ancient botanist, Pedanius Dioscorides.
The Acacia trees most commonly used for timber are commonly found throughout the east coast of Australia as well as other tropical and subtropical regions of the world including Africa and the Americas. Due to the complexity of the climates in which it is found, the tree can tolerate a range of hindrances including the lengthiest of droughts. The tree can also grow in a range of soils, temperatures and agricultural areas. It is thought that Acacias in Australia evolved resistance to forest fire around 20 million years ago.
Besides being used for wood, the genus has been used for a variety of alternative uses. In Laos and Thailand, the shoots of the Acacia pennata are used for ingredients in curries, stir fries and soups. Perhaps less exotically, Arcacia extract is also listed as an ingredient in a variety of drinks including, root beer, energy drinks and Strawberry-Lemonade Powerade.
