Kempas Wood Flooring
Kempas Wood Flooring Information
Kempas wood is a highly durable hard wood, which makes it a brilliant material for floors that expect a high level of traffic and disturbance. The wood is 33% harder than the benchmark standard, with a Janka hardiness of 1710 (making it only 20% softer than the hardest available wood) and is often used for railway ties where the wood can sustain high levels of shock and friction. Due to its overall resilience, the wood is also naturally resistant to water damage and may therefore be used in places that may have high levels of humidity, making it perfect for both commercial and home flooring. The wood is highly resistant to decay, meaning that the floor can last for years without having to be renewed, and a well kept floor actually adds to the overall value of your house.
The appearance of the wood has long been to the delight of homemakers, especially in the Far East, where the wood is often used for cabinets and ornamental purposes, as well as floors. The red tones give a unique elegance to any home and can also produce tints of orange and yellow in certain lighting conditions. The wood is also similar in colour to cherry wood (Kemper being ever so slightly lighter), and like cherry wood, Kempa also darkens as it matures, creating a warm, comforting ambience throughout any room in which it features. The grain of Kempas wood is also very tight, thus producing a slightly coarse, yet totally appetising and natural texture that may suit a room of any size. As Kempas responds well to polish, the wood looks renewed every time and adds the shine that every floor requires.
Kempa wood is made from the Koompassia Malaccensis tree. The tree originates from the tropical rainforest and is found in Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand; often around fresh water peat-swamps where it can grow to a height of up to sixty metres, making it one of the tallest trees in the world. The trunk of the tree is also reputedly thick, and sometimes can be found with a diameter of over six metres. The tree is also closely related to the Tualang Tree of Malaysia, similar in size and appearance, they can be easily confused with one another.
Like other tropical trees throughout the world, the plant has also found to have medicinal purposes. Whilst observing the Leguiminosae family of trees, scientists noted that the plants often yield attractive levels of antioxidants and bioactivities and discovered that traditionally, the bark of the Kempas tree is often used as an ailment in medicinal baths for common fevers. Although the bark was initially tested as a remedy for acne, the results showed that the treatment was ineffective.
Due to the great popularity of Kempas Wood, the tree is now protected and is listed by wildlife agencies as ‘conservation dependent’. Although the tree is by no means endangered, only a very few, specialised businesses are allowed to manufacture the wood, thus making the wood a rare and exotic delight.
