Lapacho Wood Flooring
LAPACHO WOOD FLOORING INFORMATION
Lapacho wood is considered one of the most exotic flooring materials in the world and is a perfect wood for bringing an element of the tropics into your home. Though available with a spectrum of different shades, the wood tends to be of a darker colour and as the wood matures, and will eventually mold into a uniform appearance. Also, as the wood is exposed to sunlight, like other woods, it will darken into an elegant shade of brown.
The wood has been used for decades for flooring and furniture, not only for its natural beauty, but also because of its unmatched durability and resistance. With a Janka rating of 3680 (177% harder than the benchmark rating), the wood is one of the hardest woods available in the world. Only four other woods have a higher resistance to denting and wear. This makes the wood a perfect material for floors that will find themselves a place of high traffic and friction. Also, with regards to fire, you may be pleased to know that the wood is almost indestructible with a grade A rating, the same that is applied to steel, concrete and cement. Not only this but the material is extremely resistant to moisture, making it the perfect wood for places of high humidity, such as basements and bathrooms.
Lapacho flooring derives from the Brazilian Walnut tree known as Tabebuia serratifolia and is part of the Lauraceae family of plants. Although some refer to the tree as the ‘Brazilian Walnut’, it is not actually closely related to the walnut genus.
The bark of the tree can be dried and shredded to create a sour tea. Often used by the natives of South America, the remedy has long since been used as a treatment for colds and the flu. During the 1980s’ reports stemmed from South America that doctors in South America were even successfully using the tea as a remedy against cancer and severe infections. Since then however, little research has been invested into the tea and the remedy is still considered an alternative medicine around the world thus meaning it has either has not been proved to work or has merely been proven not to work.
If you were however to make use of Lapacho wood for yourself, you may find yourself struggling. As the wood is so dense and durable, it has been known to blunt the sharpest of tools, so the pre-sharpening of any tool working on Lapacho wood is well recommended!
