Red Oak Flooring Information

Red Oak wood comes from the tree known as Quercus rubra (commonly named ‘Northern Red Oak’ or ‘Champion Oak’). The tree is part of the oak family Quercus, wherein over six hundred species of plant are found.

Due to the tree’s natural strength, beauty and ability to endure, it has long been chosen as a semiotic symbol, with oak being found on many national emblems and badges. The country of Estonia adapted oak branches as part of its coat of arms in 1925 and the tree has also been used politically for many years, finding itself the current symbol of the Conservative Party.

Often the subject of myth and folklore, the oak tree has been associated with many myths of old. Ancient Greeks believed that the wind carried the voice of Zeus onto the leaves of the oak tree, wherein they would listen intently. The god most associated with the oak tree however, is the Norse god, Thor, who was said to travel in a chariot made entirely from oak and pulled along by two goats.

Oak has been used for building since the medieval ages, and the debating chamber in The House of Commons is constructed from oak (hence the term ‘wooden halls of England’). English Oak and Sessile Oak was used until the nineteenth century for the building of warships. Today, oak is often also used to make barrels for the containment red wine and whiskey.

The Northern Red Oak, the material used for flooring, originates from North America and is commonly found in the northeast United States and in southeast Canada. The tree can grow up to 43 metres in height and can be found with a trunk up to 40 inches in diameter. The trees can also live to a very old age, some even living up five hundred years according to the United States Department of Agriculture. The tree also produces an acorn, although not fit for human consumption due to its fierce bitterness, it is a popular source of nutrition for squirrels and deer. Despite this, the leaves of the tree are poisonous to many animals, even though some may even ‘get a taste’ for the leaves and actively seek them out.

Red oak is widely considered the benchmark of hardiness with a Janka scale of 1290, which measures the wood in terms of resistance and wear. Due to the durability and resistance of the wood, Red Oak has long been a popular choice for flooring where high levels of traffic and friction are expected. Although it is only slightly less sustainable to moisture than other oaks, it is not a recommended material in places of high humidity.

Happily, Red Oak flooring can last for decades and is often used in corridors, hallways and living spaces as it can add elegance to any room requiring a touch of finery. Many people often using the light colour of the wood as a tool to make small rooms feel more spacious and elegant.
